The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024. It lets AI agents talk to external tools — databases, file systems, APIs, browsers, messaging platforms — through a single, consistent protocol. Instead of writing a custom integration per tool per agent, you install an MCP server and any compatible client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, custom agents) can use it.
