Favicons in 2025: what actually works
Favicons have evolved from a single 16×16 ICO file into a small ecosystem of formats: ICO for the root fallback, PNG for explicit size hints, SVG for crisp scaling on high-DPI displays, and Apple Touch Icons for iOS Safari bookmark thumbnails. Most sites ship the full bundle to cover every browser and OS combination.

Design rules for tiny icons
A 16×16 favicon has 256 pixels to communicate your brand. Detailed logos that read well at 256×256 often turn into mud at 16×16. Three rules from observation:
- Start from a 512×512 source so downscaled versions stay sharp.
- Strip secondary elements (taglines, ornaments, multi-color gradients) for the small sizes.
- Test on both light and dark browser themes — high-contrast designs work in both.
Extracting icons from existing ICO files
The reverse workflow — pulling images out of an ICO file — is useful when you need to edit an existing favicon, recreate brand assets from a site you do not have source files for, or audit competitor branding.
